The Ultimate Family Day Out Packing Guide: Essentials for a Hassle-Free Adventure

A family day out is a great way to make memories and experiences that will last a lifetime. But the reality is, a family day out takes a lot of planning and preparation to ensure it runs as smoothly as possible.

Whether you’re heading out for a charming countryside picnic, exploring an adventure land or venturing into a lush forest for a day of nature-filled fun, at Hatton Adventure World, we know just how much effort it takes. This is why the team have pulled together our expert tips and tricks, so that you can stay organised and know exactly what to bring so that your next excursion goes off without a hitch.

So, grab your waterproofs, pack some snacks, and let’s dive into the essentials for a hassle-free adventure!

  1. The adventure-ready backpack

Every successful family day out begins with a staple backpack that often feels like it has the same storage capacity as Mary Poppins’ own bag. You should choose a rucksack that’s functional and comfortable to wear. Look for compartments and pockets to keep things organised and adjustable straps for support.

  1. Picnic perfection

If you’re on a budget and eating out isn’t an option, you could always plan and pack lunches and snacks to enjoy throughout the day. Pack a cooler with all your family’s favourites. From cheese sandwiches, to fresh fruit, finger foods such as sausage rolls and scotch eggs, to a thermos filled with tea or coffee for the grown-ups and cartons of squash, you could have a fab picnic! And don’t forget reusable cutlery and napkins – it’s good for both your wallet and the environment!

  1. Hydration for the nation

Hydration is key to feeling good and enjoying a day out – especially if you’re out and about on a hot day. Save cash and the environment by filling up a couple of reusable water bottles for everyone in the family. You can even add a dash of excitement by infusing the water with berries or citrus slices. Remember, hydrated families are happy families.

  1. Prepare for the weather

The UK weather can be pretty volatile, and is renowned for changing its mind. Pack a mix of clothing for all seasons – layers are your best friend. Bring water proofs, hats, and warmer layers for those unpredictable moments. And of course, let’s not forget the sunscreen. Protect those precious little faces from the bright British sun.

  1. Bring some travel entertainment

Long car journeys or waiting times can be a bit of a bore, especially for the kids who don’t like to stay still for too long. Prepare for these moments by packing some entertainment. Books, colouring books, puzzles, tablets or a playlist of their favourite songs can turn a tedious car ride into a sing-along adventure!

  1. Pack a first aid kit

Accidents happen, so be prepared with a mini first-aid kit. Include plasters for those scraped knees, antiseptic wipes, pain relievers, sting relief spray and any necessary medications for allergies or other health needs. Safety first, fun second!

  1. Familiarise yourself with any new routes

A reliable map or GPS device is your compass to adventure. While we love spontaneity, it’s also crucial to have a plan, especially when travelling with children. Know your routes, car parks and ensure you have a way to stay connected, just in case.

  1. Book days out in advance

Booking a family-friendly day out in advance is especially important if going during peak seasons (such as the Easter or Summer Holidays), as attractions tend to get fully booked really quickly. Booking tickets online or in advance will avoid any disappointment and prevent you wasting hours queuing at ticket booths.

We always recommend booking Hatton Adventure World in advance, especially during high season. With a daily programme of events for everyone and over 450 creatures, 60 different breeds and species set in 100 acres of countryside, it gets booked up quickly!

Tickets start from £9.95 during low season for non-members. If you love exploring Hatton and want to experience fun all year round, it may be worth becoming a member. Find out more here.

  1. Souvenirs and keepsakes

Souvenirs don’t always have to come from a gift shop. Why not immortalise those memories and capture your family’s precious moments with a camera or smartphone? You’ll cherish them forever forever. Plus, they make excellent souvenirs for your day out.

  1. Bring a sense of adventure

Last but not least, bring your sense of adventure! Be open to new experiences and spontaneous detours. Let your kids’ curiosity guide you as you explore and enjoy a family day out together!
