David Beckham has one, as has Tom Daly, Paris Hilton and Harry Potter co-star Rupert Grint – the celebrity world is going from style to sty in search of the new must-have accessory – the Micro Pig.

Now, Hatton Adventure Farm has got a whole new litter of former city dwelling micro-pigs which was a surprise to all concerned – particularly as the father was thought to have been neutered!

The seven piglets, which were born in a garden at Great Barr, Birmingham, have been rehomed at Hatton Adventure Farm after the owner was unable to get them placed with any animal sanctuaries.

The saga began when Peter Herbert’s domesticated micro pig – a breed which can be housetrained – became depressed and stopped eating so the vet recommended getting him a mate.

Mr Herbert bought a sow from a rescue centre but unfortunately the new friendship soon bore fruit, even though the original male was supposed to have been castrated.

“It came as a bit of a shock,” said Mr Herbert, who also keeps chickens and ducks in his garden. “My children and I love our animals but I couldn’t have nine pigs running round the house. I tried everywhere to get them rehoused but without any luck. Then someone told me about Richard Craddock, the manager at Hatton Adventure Farm, and he agreed to take them in.”

Mr Craddock, who has been at the adventure farm for 25 years, said: “They have settled in extremely well and are very much at home. They have already become a popular attraction.

“Micro pigs are extremely friendly and can make good pets – in fact, I believe David Beckham has some – but you certainly wouldn’t want a house full, even if they are toilet trained!”

The micro pigs have joined a wide variety of farm animals at Hatton, including standard pigs, sheep, goats and cows – and some more exotic farm animals, such as alpacas and reindeer.

The animals – and pet guinea pigs and rabbits – will play their part in Hatton’s Summer Spectacular, which will feature sheep and goat racing, duck trialling and falconry displays, as well as children’s shows, a host of adventure activities and a giant soft play zone.
